The Sharpie Series was born of the creative revolution facilitated by the 2020 pandemic. Experimentation with one of the world’s most readily available and easily accessible art instruments, Sharpie markers, led to the development of Oakley's unique signature style of drawing. Colorful Sharpie marks drawn at a common angle are layered in multitudes to render icons of popular culture, and flat rhinestoned imagery enhances each composition with an element of wit and glamour. Here, Oakley explores the ephemeral nature of celebrity: over time, the Sharpie markers will fade, and the rhinestoned objects will persist, just as the subjects of this series’ notoriety will fade, leaving only glittery remnants of their impression on the world.
